PARIS, FRANCE (Sportsman’s Daily Wire Service) Sixty-seven year old Englishman Max Mosley, four term president of the
ruling body that governs Formula One (the Fédération Internationale de
l'Automobile or FIA), has come under increasing pressure to resign in
the aftermath of a video showing him in a series of elaborately
staged S&M scenes indebted to "Third Reich style." In a representative
scene, the usually urbane Mosley barks orders in German as he's
whipped by hookers in concentration camp garb while prostitutes in
Nazi uniforms look on.
The video caused what the NY Post called a "Major Fuhrer," prompting
many in the motorsports world to demand Mosley's immediate dismissal.
Rick Downs, principal of McLaren, one of the most successful Formula
One teams, is among Mosley's most vocal critics. Downs has referred to
the autocratic Mosley as "a dictator," "a tyrant," and "a fascist,"
and is visibly delighted to be able to now call him a Nazi.
"But I must say it just never entered my mind. I mean, everyone knows
his parents (Diana Mitford and Sir Oswald Mosley) were famous Nazi
sympathizers, so when he says something or does something that doesn't
sound or even feel right, you go in the other direction and say, no,
no, he could not possibly mean that. When, in retrospect, that was
exactly what he meant."
Downs specifically cites Mosley's campaign to "purify the race," which
Downs says didn't have the ominous overtones it did then as it does
now.
"In fact, that's exactly where I disagreed with Mosley most violently.
He's a reactionary – well, a Nazi, actually – and is always pulling us
toward some imagined past, a mythical time when – and I quote –
'drivers were a race of sun-dappled gods in winged machines, charging through
timeless mists from distant German forests.' But racing like all
sports evolves…apparently not unlike escort services. I wasn't aware
that kind of thing -- rough sex in minutely observed historical
settings-- is an option. Now that's progress."
Others who worked with Mosley, even those who knew him best, mention
only in retrospect that they "saw signs," but nothing to prepare them
for what they saw in the widely viewed video.
"After a particularly heated meeting, tensions eased and I extended my
hand, joshingly calling him Mein Fuhrer," said Sven Karlsson, a member
of the FIA board. "A chill came over the room. He looks at me, Sven
Karlsson, like I've just crawled out of some shtetl. Finally, after
what seemed like forever, he goes: 'There is but one Fuhrer. I am a
mere Oberführer humbling serving the FIA and its interests, which
presently extends to contested territories in the east. ' He mumbled
something about lebensraum and I just quietly slipped out of the
room."
Even those who worked on his immediate staff said they were surprised
to learn of Mosley's leanings, though most remained supportive.
"Max Mosley is one of
the finest men I've ever had the privilege of working for," said FIA
Senior Vice President Adolph Schickler. "Yes, he's been known to bark orders and humiliate subordinates by forcing them to polish
his boots until he can see his nose hairs in its reflection. But
there's as another side most don't get to see. He once walked into a
meeting with a bunch of advertising execs and first thing out of his
mouth, 'Gentlemen, start your panzers!' The room shook with laughter
for easily five minutes."
Mosley's Executive Assistant Inga Braun calls her boss a dream to work
for. "I don't care what's on the video, I would blindly follow Max off
a cliff. Which I did just three months ago. Thankfully about eight
people preceded me – their bodies in the bottom of the ravine broke my
fall."
Jody David Scheckter, the 1979 Formula One World Drivers Champion and
the first race car driver to be elected into the International Jewish
Sports Hall of Fame, urges authorities to honor Mosley's wishes for"ze maximum allowable punishment." "Mosley needs to be punished,
absolutely. For starters, they should bring him to the Scheckter
family seder. We go through the entire Hagaddah before you're allowed
to eat even a single piece of matzoh. It's torture."
